How do I safely add my own model API key (BYOK)?

Enter a provider key in local model settings, verify the endpoint and model ID, and keep the key out of public content.

Short answer

Local BYOK credentials stay on the device and connect directly to the provider; hosted and local keys use different paths.

Where do I add a local BYOK key?

In the desktop app, open Models → This device → Manage API Keys, choose a provider, and enter the API key it issued. Add a custom endpoint or model ID if needed, then save. When editing an existing item, its key is not filled back in; leaving the field blank keeps the existing key. Verify the provider, protocol, endpoint, and model before saving.

Is a local key uploaded to Lumoswitch's cloud?

For a local LiteLLM configuration, the local runtime sends provider requests directly and encrypts the provider key with system secure storage on the device. Local key management does not call cloud key creation or quota APIs. Hosted BYOK supports existing keys only; adding or replacing online keys is disabled. Add new keys locally.

What if the model still cannot be called?

Check that the key is active, your provider account has access, and the model ID is valid for that endpoint. Verify the API prefix and protocol, then check the provider's balance or rate limit. Do not paste a key into screenshots, community posts, or support tickets. If exposed, revoke it at the provider and create a replacement.
